Eddies, Cosmos Share Spoils In 1-1 Draw

EDMONTON, AB. – FC Edmonton striker Daryl Fordyce scored his first goal since his return at the end of the first half before Emmanuel Ledesma’s 66th minute rocket split the result in a 1-1 draw at Clarke Stadium on Friday, August 11.

“You take a point against the Cosmos anytime with their quality and the budget they have, so we take nothing away from the players,” FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. “They gave everything right until the end with some terrific performances. It’s great to see [Daryl Fordyce] score his first since returning and it was very entertaining match.”

The Eddies kept the same starting XI that won in Indianapolis a week prior, beginning the first of two-straight home matches with Puerto Rico FC coming to Clarke Stadium next Sunday.

Eddies leading scorer Tomi Ameobi nearly added another goal to his name in the opening 10 minutes of play, controlling the ball with his chest before firing a shot on target that was terrifically saved by goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer at his near post.

Coming off a two-goal performance against Indy Eleven, winger Dustin Corea nearly netted his fourth goal of the campaign on 14 minutes when the Salvadorian won the ball off Cosmos ‘keeper Maurer on the 40-yard-line, but was unable to find the net from the sideline after facing heavy pressure from Maurer.

The Eddies continued their push for the opening goal and the home side nearly got in on 23 minutes. After a punt from Tyson Farago, Ameobi found himself one-on-one with Cosmos defender Dejan Jakovic, getting a touch on the ball but trickling wide of the near post.

The constant offensive pressure from the Eddies paid off right before the half-time break. Winger Ben Fisk received the ball from Corea before curling in a good cross to the back post. Ameobi headed the ball across the six-yard-box for Fordyce, who tapped the ball into the net to give the Eddies a 1-0 lead heading into the half-time break.

The Cosmos got the equalizing goal on 66 minutes through a terrific strike from Ledesma. The midfielder turned and fired a left-footed shot from range that found the top corner of Farago’s goal, leaving the Winnipeg, MB product with no chance.

Despite both sides pushing for the game winning goal, neither side were unable to find the back of the net despite creating good scoring opportunities. The 1-1 scoreline would hold through 90 minutes of play and both sides would settle for a point as head referee Alain Ruch blew his final whistle to conclude the match.
